The virus season has been in full swing for quite some time, and many people are once again dealing with colds, respiratory infections, lingering coughs, and general weakness. Because seasonal viruses spread so quickly and symptoms can last for days or even weeks, having effective home remedies is incredibly valuable. Over the years, I have collected and tested many traditional methods, and now I want to share with you the ones that have helped my family the most. These simple mixtures and natural treatments can support the body, reduce symptoms, and ease discomfort, especially when used early in the course of an illness. They are not meant to replace medical treatment when it is needed, but they can be extremely helpful companions.

One of my most trusted remedies involves preparing two separate liquid mixtures. First, take 0.5 liters of water and add 1 tablespoon of salt along with 40–50 grams of 10% ammonia spirit. In another container, pour 0.5 liters of water and dissolve 10 grams of camphor spirit in it. Once both are prepared, combine these two solutions in one bottle and shake the mixture vigorously until the flakes that form are completely dissolved. This creates a powerful rub that can be used externally. Massage the mixture thoroughly onto the patient’s back and chest. This helps stimulate blood circulation, ease congestion, and warm the respiratory passages. Many people find that this method provides quick relief, especially during the early stages of a cold or flu.

This mixture can also be taken internally, though the dosage must be followed carefully. For children under one year old, give just 1 drop diluted in 1 tablespoon of water. For children older than one year, add as many drops into one glass of water as the child’s age—for example, a five-year-old would get five drops in a glass of water. Adults can take 1 teaspoon of the mixture diluted in a full glass of water. This internal method is known in folk medicine to help clear the respiratory system and support recovery.

Raspberry stems are another wonderful natural remedy for flu and fever. Take 1 tablespoon of finely chopped raspberry branches and pour 1 cup of boiling water over them. Boil the mixture for 10 minutes, then let it steep for one and a half hours. Drink one cup of this infusion three times a day. Raspberry stems have strong anti-inflammatory and sweat-inducing properties, making them excellent for lowering fever and easing flu symptoms.

When the throat becomes inflamed, another effective remedy uses simple ingredients you likely already have at home. Take equal amounts of grated apple and grated onion, then mix in the same amount of honey. This creates a soothing natural syrup rich in vitamins, enzymes, and antibacterial compounds. Take 2–3 teaspoons of this mixture two or three times per day. It helps reduce inflammation, softens the throat, and fights bacteria that may be contributing to soreness.

For high fever, an apple compress can provide very quick relief. Finely grate an apple and spread it thinly onto a piece of gauze. Place the gauze on the forehead and leave it there until the apple pulp warms up. This method helps draw heat away from the body in a gentle, natural way. Many people do not realize that alcohol can also act as a very effective fever reducer. Rub the patient’s back and chest with alcohol, but do not cover them with a blanket afterward. Because ethanol evaporates rapidly, it cools the skin and lowers the body temperature safely and effectively.

Another useful mixture can be made by combining 2 tablespoons of butter, 2 egg yolks, 1 teaspoon of wheat flour, and 2 teaspoons of natural honey. Mix everything thoroughly until smooth. Take one teaspoon several times a day. This nutrient-rich blend helps strengthen the body, soothe irritated tissues, and provide energy during recovery.

When dealing with a productive cough—one in which mucus is present but difficult to expel—it is important to use remedies that help liquefy and release the phlegm. A traditional herbal mixture works wonderfully for this purpose. Combine equal small amounts (just the tip of a spoon) of anise, cinnamon, and thyme. Pour one glass of boiling water over the herbs, cover the container, and let it sit until it cools down. Drink the infusion to help loosen mucus and ease breathing.

Another effective drink for wet coughs is a warm mixture of milk and Borjomi mineral water. Heat 3/4 cup of milk until hot but not boiling, then add 1/4 cup of Borjomi. Sip the mixture slowly in small gulps. This drink helps open the respiratory passages, reduces irritation, and supports the clearing of mucus from the lungs.

Herbal remedies known for their expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects are also helpful. Coltsfoot, plantain, chamomile, licorice root, and dill have long been used to soothe the respiratory system. These herbs support the body’s natural ability to remove mucus, reduce inflammation, and fight infection.

During bronchitis and pneumonia, it is especially important to enrich the diet with dairy products. They contain calcium, which benefits inflamed airways, and specific fats that are easily absorbed and support the healing process. Warm milk-based drinks, soft cheeses, and fermented dairy products can help strengthen the body and provide comfort.

Traditional remedies like these have been passed down through generations because they genuinely help people feel better during seasonal illnesses. The key to their effectiveness is consistency—using them daily and giving the body the natural support it needs. Home treatments can be comforting, simple, and surprisingly powerful when used correctly.
