Why does atherosclerosis develop?

Atherosclerosis is one of the most widespread chronic diseases of the cardiovascular system and is considered a leading cause of serious health complications worldwide. It develops gradually and often remains unnoticed for many years, until it causes severe damage to vital organs such as the heart, brain, or kidneys. Understanding the causes of atherosclerosis is essential for both prevention and management.

There are many causes of atherosclerosis. These causes are also referred to as risk factors. The term “risk factor” means that these conditions or characteristics increase the likelihood of developing atherosclerosis. Conventionally, the causes of this disease can be divided into two main groups:

Non-modifiable risk factors – factors that cannot be changed.

Modifiable risk factors – factors that depend on our lifestyle, habits, and personal choices.

Non-modifiable risk factors of atherosclerosis

Age

Age is one of the most significant risk factors for atherosclerosis. As a person grows older, the risk of developing atherosclerosis increases. The older the individual, the higher the probability of atherosclerotic changes in the blood vessels. For this reason, atherosclerosis is often considered a condition associated with aging. It is well known that after a certain age, atherosclerotic changes in the blood vessels are observed in almost everyone. The risk increases noticeably after the age of 45–50.

Gender

Gender is another independent risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. Men tend to develop atherosclerosis approximately 10 years earlier than women and have a four times higher risk of developing the disease before the age of 50. This difference largely disappears after the age of 50, which is associated with hormonal changes in women and the reduced protective role of female sex hormones—estrogens—on the cardiovascular system.

Genetic predisposition

Genetic predisposition is another important non-modifiable risk factor. Individuals who have a family history of atherosclerosis or related cardiovascular diseases are at a higher risk. It is believed that genetic factors play a crucial role in the early development of atherosclerosis, particularly before the age of 50. After this age, hereditary factors tend to play a less dominant role compared to lifestyle and environmental influences.

The role of natural remedies in supporting vascular health

Although non-modifiable risk factors cannot be changed, nature offers a variety of plants that can support vascular health and overall well-being. One such remarkable plant is dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), which has been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

Dandelion juice – a natural ally for brain and blood vessel health

From May to October, it is recommended to consume juice made from dandelion leaves and roots. Dandelion is rich in biologically active compounds, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bitter substances that have a beneficial effect on the human body.

Dandelion juice is known to strengthen the walls of blood vessels and improve their elasticity. It is particularly effective for the blood vessels of the brain. Regular and proper use of this natural remedy may help protect against sclerosis, improve memory, calm the nervous system, regulate sleep, and enhance overall health.

How to prepare dandelion juice

Collect fresh dandelion leaves and roots from ecologically clean areas, away from roads and industrial pollution.

Wash the plant thoroughly under running water.

Pass the leaves and roots through a meat grinder or blend them using a blender.

Squeeze the mixture through a clean cloth or fine strainer to extract the juice.

How to use it

Take 30–50 drops of dandelion juice, four times a day, before meals. This dosage allows the body to gradually absorb the active compounds without overloading the system.

Health benefits of dandelion juice

Strengthens the walls of blood vessels and improves circulation

Supports brain health and protects against sclerosis

Enhances memory and cognitive function

Calms the nervous system and reduces stress

Helps regulate sleep patterns

Supports liver function and detoxification processes

Improves digestion and metabolism

Contributes to overall physical and mental well-being

Dandelion juice works gently but effectively, supporting the body’s natural processes rather than forcing artificial changes. This makes it especially valuable for long-term use when prepared and consumed correctly.
