A Miracle Remedy Made from Green Walnuts: Improves Eyesight, Supports the Joints, and Strengthens the Thyroid Gland
This remedy was shared with me by my neighbor, who has been using it for many decades. According to her, it has been a constant part of her life and daily health routine. Thanks to this natural preparation, she has been able to read without glasses for nearly 70 years. Even at an advanced age, she remains very active, energetic, and rarely experiences seasonal colds during the spring and winter months. She firmly believes that this traditional walnut-based remedy has played a significant role in maintaining her vitality, strong immunity, and overall well-being.

She learned about this preparation from her grandmother, who lived to the age of 90. Her grandmother remained physically active and mentally sharp until the very last days of her life. She was known in the family as a remarkably healthy woman who moved easily, rarely complained of illness, and relied primarily on natural remedies rather than pharmaceutical drugs. Because of this family history and the visible results across generations, my neighbor considers the preparation of this walnut remedy not just useful, but essential.
The recipe itself is not complicated, and the ingredients are simple and accessible. The key is to use young, green walnuts at the right time of year.
To prepare the first version of the remedy, you will need 15 large green walnuts that are still very young and soft. The best time to harvest them is around June, when they have not yet developed a hard shell. At this stage, the entire walnut can be easily cut with a knife. Wash the walnuts thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt or residue. After washing, cut them into small pieces and place them in a three-liter glass jar.
Next, take 30 grams of fresh yeast and dissolve it in two liters of boiled water that has been allowed to cool slightly until it is warm but not hot. The temperature is important because water that is too hot can destroy the yeast. After dissolving the yeast in the warm water, add an equal amount of sugar to the mixture and stir very well until the sugar is completely dissolved. Once the sugar has fully dissolved, pour the liquid into the jar containing the chopped green walnuts.
Close the jar with a lid and place it in a warm location where it will not be exposed to direct sunlight. It is important to store it in a dark or shaded place to allow the fermentation process to occur properly. After sufficient time has passed and the mixture has infused, strain the liquid through gauze or a fine cloth to remove the solid walnut pieces. The resulting liquid is the prepared remedy. It is recommended to take one tablespoon once a day between meals.
In addition to this fermented walnut preparation, there is also an alcoholic green walnut tincture that is considered excellent for stomach and intestinal discomfort. This version is stronger and is traditionally used in smaller quantities.
To prepare the alcoholic tincture, you will need 30 green walnuts of the same young and soft quality. Cut them into small cubes and place them into a three-liter glass jar. Pour one liter of alcohol over the walnuts and seal the jar tightly with a plastic lid to prevent evaporation. It is important that the alcohol does not escape during the infusion process.
Leave the jar in a dark place for two weeks. During this time, the alcohol will extract the active compounds from the green walnuts. After two weeks, strain the liquid and pour it into a dark glass bottle or jar. Seal it tightly to preserve its properties. For stomach pain, digestive disturbances, or to stimulate appetite, it is recommended to take 10 grams of the tincture three times a day, approximately half an hour before meals.
Healing Walnut Balm
Recently, an acquaintance told me how her entire family treats various ailments using a walnut balm. I tried to find a similar recipe online but was unable to locate it. For this reason, I decided to write it down so that I would not forget it myself and perhaps it might be useful to someone else.
The recipe for the walnut balm requires:
42 green walnuts
400 milliliters of vodka (about 2 cups)
400 grams of sugar (about 2 cups)
First, cut the green walnuts into pieces and place them in a two-liter glass jar. Pour the vodka over the walnuts and add one cup of sugar. Close the jar and place it in a dark location for 45 days. During this period, the walnuts will release their beneficial components into the liquid. After 45 days, strain the liquid carefully.
Then, pour fresh vodka over the same walnuts again and add the second cup of sugar. Place the jar back in a dark place for another 45 days. After this second infusion period, strain the liquid once more and combine it with the first strained liquid. The combined mixture becomes the finished walnut balm.
The recommended dosage is one tablespoon once a day. According to my acquaintance, she managed to recover from goiter after using this balm consistently for one year. She also uses it preventively: if she feels that she is beginning to catch a cold, she swallows one tablespoon of the balm and also gargles with it to soothe her throat.
For joint pain, the balm can be used externally. Soak a cotton pad or tampon in the liquid and rub it onto the painful areas. Massage gently and continue applying regularly until improvement is felt. Many people claim that it helps reduce inflammation, ease stiffness, and improve mobility in affected joints.
Green walnuts are traditionally valued because they contain iodine, vitamin C, antioxidants, and various biologically active compounds. In folk medicine, they are believed to support thyroid function, boost immunity, strengthen blood vessels, and improve digestion. While these remedies are widely respected in traditional practice, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before beginning any new treatment, especially for individuals with chronic conditions, thyroid disorders, or alcohol sensitivity.
These walnut-based preparations represent a piece of traditional knowledge passed down through generations. Whether used as a fermented drink, a tincture, or a balm, they reflect a long-standing belief in the healing power of natural ingredients.
