I had no idea that in traditional medicine, beets were used to treat so many diseases! I cannot hide my amazement!
I came across this information completely by chance while looking through my mother’s notebook — she was deeply interested in folk medicine and collected various natural remedies and recipes over the years. Among all the plants she wrote about, beets stood out as an incredibly versatile natural remedy, capable of supporting the body in numerous conditions.

Beets are considered one of the best natural remedies for liver health, hepatitis, diabetes, hypertension, allergies, as well as joint and thyroid disorders. Their therapeutic potential lies not only in their roots but also in their leaves, which are rich in vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds.
Here are some of the traditional beet remedies my mother recorded:
For colds and respiratory issues:
Freshly squeezed beet juice can be mixed with honey in a 2:1 ratio. Then, 5 drops of this mixture are instilled into each nostril. For children, it is preferable to use boiled beet juice without honey, as the combination of raw beet juice and honey can cause a burning sensation.
For lung inflammation and pleurisy:
It is recommended to drink freshly squeezed beet juice (used within 2–3 hours after extraction) in half-cup servings, 3–4 times a day before meals. This helps reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and supports the immune system.
For anemia:
Combine one cup of freshly squeezed beet juice with carrot and black radish juices, then add one cup of honey and mix thoroughly. Take 1.5–2 tablespoons before each meal. Beets, being rich in iron, folate, and other micronutrients, naturally support red blood cell production and improve hemoglobin levels.
For leukemia:
Mix 80 grams of beet juice with 340 grams of carrot juice. Consume 1 tablespoon before meals, three times a day. This combination has been historically used in folk medicine to support blood health and strengthen overall immunity.
For hypertension:
Drink a mixture of 100 grams of beet juice, honey, and dry wine in a 4:2:1 ratio on an empty stomach in the morning. The minerals in beets, including potassium and magnesium, help regulate blood pressure, while antioxidants help reduce oxidative stress on blood vessels.
For mastitis:
Grated beet can be mixed with a small amount of olive oil and applied externally to the affected area on the chest. The anti-inflammatory properties of beets help reduce swelling and discomfort.
For diabetes:
Beet leaves are especially beneficial for managing blood sugar levels. Drink 1/3–1/2 cup of freshly squeezed beet leaf juice throughout the day. The leaves contain more vitamins and trace elements than the root itself. Personally, I have diabetes and have experienced firsthand how effective beet leaf juice is in lowering blood sugar levels naturally.
Medical commentary:
Beets are rich in proteins, dietary fiber, sugars, fats, pigments, mineral salts (magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, iodine), vitamin C, B-complex vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B9, PP), folic acid, and betaine. Every part of the beet plant can be consumed, and due to its medicinal and dietary properties, it is recommended in numerous diseases. Dietary fiber and organic acids in beets stimulate gastric secretion and intestinal peristalsis, producing positive results in spastic colitis. High vitamin and iron content makes beets highly effective in treating anemia.
Beets are also highly beneficial for individuals with thyroid dysfunction, including thyrotoxicosis, as well as atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disorders. Potassium in beets has anti-arrhythmic properties, magnesium helps lower blood pressure, and iodine positively affects cholesterol metabolism. In traditional medicine, beet juice is widely used to treat hypertension and liver diseases.
In addition to the roots, beet leaves provide significant therapeutic effects, especially for people with metabolic issues, as they contain concentrated vitamins and minerals that support detoxification, digestion, and overall health. Regular consumption of beet juice strengthens the immune system, supports liver function, and improves skin health, making the skin smoother and more radiant. Beets also aid in reducing inflammation throughout the body, protect the cardiovascular system, and support kidney and urinary tract function.
It is remarkable how traditional medicine recognized the versatility of beets long before modern science confirmed their benefits. By integrating beet juice, both roots and leaves, into the daily diet, people historically addressed multiple health issues simultaneously: boosting immunity, improving digestion, reducing blood pressure, supporting thyroid function, and aiding in the management of chronic illnesses like diabetes and anemia.
In summary, beets are a natural powerhouse for human health. From raw juice to cooked preparations, they provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds essential for preventing disease and maintaining wellness. Folk remedies using beets show how a simple, natural ingredient can have profound therapeutic effects on the body. Whether used to treat anemia, support cardiovascular health, improve digestion, or regulate blood sugar, beets remain one of the most valuable plants in both traditional and modern medicine.
This remarkable vegetable demonstrates the wisdom of folk medicine: even without expensive drugs or synthetic treatments, natural remedies like beets can provide effective support for a wide variety of health conditions. By following these traditional recipes — whether in juice, decoction, or external application — anyone can harness the healing potential of beets in their daily life.
