Not all plastics are equally dangerous…

Every plastic bottle has a label that indicates what type of plastic it is made from. This information is extremely important and should never be ignored when purchasing bottled water or other beverages.

The reason is simple: different types of plastic release different kinds and levels of potentially hazardous chemicals. Some are relatively safe, while others can seriously harm human health, especially when used incorrectly or repeatedly. Below, we will take a detailed look at the most common plastic markings you may find on bottles and containers, what they mean, and how they can affect your body.

Almost every plastic bottle contains one of the symbols listed below. Here is what each of them means in detail:

PET or PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

PET plastics are typically used for single-use bottles, especially water and soft drink bottles. This type of plastic can release heavy metals and chemical substances that negatively affect the human hormonal balance.

PET is the most widely used type of plastic in the world. One very important fact to remember is that it is designed strictly for single use. If you refill a PET bottle with water and use it again, you should be aware that large amounts of bacteria can develop inside it. These bacteria thrive on PET surfaces and can easily enter your body along with the water.

In addition to bacterial contamination, repeated use and exposure to heat or sunlight can increase the release of harmful substances into the liquid. For this reason, PET bottles should never be reused, especially for storing water over long periods of time.

HDP or HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

This is a high-quality plastic that releases little to no harmful substances. Specialists strongly recommend choosing water packaged in HDPE bottles whenever possible. This type of plastic is considered one of the safest for food and beverage storage.

HDPE is not only safer for human health but also more environmentally friendly. Almost all HDPE products are recyclable, making them a better choice for reducing environmental impact.

This is a dense and durable type of plastic most commonly used for milk containers, detergent bottles, toys, and household chemical packaging. It does not easily break down or leach chemicals, which makes it one of the best options for bottled water.

PVC or V (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Products made from PVC release at least two dangerous chemical substances. Both of these chemicals negatively affect hormonal balance and can disrupt the endocrine system.

PVC is a soft and flexible plastic. It is often used for storing vegetable oils and certain liquids. However, due to the chemicals it releases, PVC is considered unsafe for food and beverage storage, especially when exposed to heat or sunlight.

Long-term exposure to PVC-related chemicals has been linked to hormonal disorders and other health issues, which is why experts advise avoiding food and drinks stored in this type of plastic whenever possible.

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)

LDPE is used for making bottles as well as various types of plastic packaging. It does not release chemical substances into the water stored inside it, which makes it relatively safe for water storage.

However, this safety applies only to water. Other products stored in LDPE packaging are not recommended for consumption. In such cases, you may be ingesting not only the product itself but also chemicals that are extremely harmful to your health, particularly to your heart and cardiovascular system.

LDPE is often used for plastic bags, wraps, and squeeze bottles. While it is flexible and lightweight, its safe usage is limited and should be approached with caution.

PP (Polypropylene)

This type of plastic is white or semi-transparent in color. It is commonly used for storing syrups, yogurts, and food containers.

Polypropylene is valued for its heat resistance. When exposed to high temperatures, it does not melt easily and maintains its structural integrity. For this reason, PP is considered relatively safe, especially compared to many other plastics.

Because of its stability, PP is often used for microwave-safe containers and hot food packaging. Among plastics, it is one of the better options for food and beverage storage.

PS (Polystyrene)

Polystyrene is often used for disposable coffee cups and fast-food containers. When heated, it releases dangerous chemical compounds that can be harmful to human health.

Polystyrene is a cheap, lightweight, and fairly durable plastic. However, it is absolutely unsuitable for storing hot food and drinks. Exposure to heat significantly increases the release of toxic substances, which can then enter the body.

Regular consumption of hot beverages or food from polystyrene containers may increase health risks over time, including nervous system and hormonal issues.

PC or Plastic Without Specific Markings (Polycarbonate)

This is considered the most dangerous type of plastic. It is commonly used for water bottles and food containers, especially those without clear recycling symbols.

Containers made from polycarbonate should never be used for storing food or water. This type of plastic releases Bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known chemical that severely disrupts the endocrine system. BPA interferes with hormone production, particularly reducing estrogen levels, and has been linked to various health problems.

Because of its serious health risks, many experts strongly advise avoiding polycarbonate containers altogether, especially for daily use.

Final Thoughts

Before buying any food or beverage stored in a plastic bottle, take a moment to carefully examine the label and plastic type. This simple habit can significantly reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Whenever possible, choose products packaged in glass containers. Glass is far safer, does not release toxic substances, and preserves the quality and taste of food and drinks much better than plastic. Being informed and cautious about plastic types is an essential step toward protecting your health and the well-being of your family.
