During the winter season, cold weather, humidity, wind, and low temperatures create ideal conditions for coughs and colds to spread. As people spend more time indoors, viruses and bacteria circulate more easily. For this reason, coughing, sore throat, and general cold symptoms become extremely common. Many people immediately turn to various chemical medications to relieve these conditions, but in reality, there are many natural remedies that can be just as effective—and in some cases even safer and gentler for the body. One of the most time-tested and effective natural treatments is a simple homemade cough remedy, which works as a soothing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory solution.

A cough can be caused by viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, the flu, common colds, post-nasal drip, or even dryness in the air. In winter, indoor heating systems dry out the air, which irritates the throat even more. That’s why natural remedies that warm, soothe, and moisturize the throat can be extremely beneficial. Many people already know how effective honey and lemon are together, but combining them with other medicinal spices—such as ginger and cloves—makes the remedy even more powerful. These ingredients are well-known for their antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
This recipe is simple, inexpensive, and can be made with ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen. The final product is a natural “cough candy”—a sweet, soothing drop that calms irritation, reduces throat pain, and helps thin mucus, making coughing easier and less painful.
Preparation:
Start by placing 1/2 cup of sugar into a small saucepan. Sugar melts and forms the base of the mixture, giving the remedy a pleasant taste and helping the ingredients combine into a smooth, thick syrup. Add 1/2 cup of water and heat the mixture slowly, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
Next, add the juice of half a lemon. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in strengthening the immune system. Its acidity helps break down mucus and reduces the heavy feeling in the throat. It also acts as a mild antibacterial agent.
Then add one tablespoon of honey. Honey is a natural antibacterial and soothing agent that has been used for centuries to treat coughs. It helps reduce inflammation, coats the throat with a protective layer, and eases irritation.
After that, add 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger. Ginger contains gingerol and shogaol, powerful anti-inflammatory compounds. It warms the body, stimulates circulation, and supports the immune system.
Next, include 1/4 teaspoon of crushed cloves. Cloves contain eugenol, a natural pain reliever and antiseptic. They help reduce throat discomfort, fight bacteria, and thin mucus.
Stir all the ingredients well and bring the mixture to a boil. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for a few more minutes until it slightly thickens. Remove the mixture from heat and let it cool for about 15–20 minutes—just enough so it becomes thick but still pourable.
Prepare a tray lined with baking paper and pour the mixture in small drops, forming little candies. Allow them to cool and harden for about 20 minutes. When they are fully set, sprinkle powdered sugar on top so the pieces do not stick together.
You can consume 1–2 pieces whenever you experience coughing or a sore throat. Alternatively, you can dissolve one or two candies in warm (not boiling) water and drink the mixture as a soothing infusion, which works even faster and helps relax the throat.
